When does my car need an oil change?
Identifying when your vehicle needs an oil change is simple. Pay close attention to your vehicle’s owner’s manual and its scheduled maintenance intervals at the recommended mileage. This helps ensure oil changes are completed before any engine damage can occur. Another way to keep track is by watching the oil monitor message on your dashboard. Many newer-model vehicles come equipped with intelligent oil monitors that inform you when it’s time to change your oil and filter.
General Guidelines:
- 2008 and newer model-year vehicles should receive oil changes every 7,500 miles or every six months, whichever comes first.
- 2007 and older model-year vehicles should receive oil changes every 5,000 miles or every six months, whichever comes first.
Why are oil changes so important?
When you get an oil change, the old motor oil is drained, then replaced with fresh, new oil. Regular oil and filter changes are a critical component to maintaining the life and longevity of your engine. That’s because the right oil helps keep your vehicle’s engine clean, reduces overall wear and maximizes its performance. Technically speaking, oil undergoes a thermal breakdown due to high operating temperatures. When this occurs, the oil becomes less effective as a lubricant. Without a good lubricant, parts of the engine being to rub together and wear each other out.
